Celebrating  || my gorgeous friend Kate’s wedding! It was a beautiful ceremony and a fun reception at the groom’s parents’ house. It sounds crazy, but they cleaned out their furniture from their great room (it was large with high, vaulted ceilings and huge windows) and set up tables and chairs. It really worked great! Hubby’s band played, the food was yummy and there was good beer. Overall, a total win!

Planting || our vegetable garden! We finally went to Lowe’s and got the wood for our last bed and some of our plants (some actually turned out to be most). We got them in the ground on Friday! We actually chose a few things we’ve never done before, including Brussels sprouts, asparagus, and romaine lettuce. We also got the usual herbs (and added cilantro!), squash, cucumber, and tomatoes. We will go back for peppers, eggplants, and the other kind of tomato we didn’t see yet: yellow gold cherry tomatoes- they grew like CRAZY and we all ate them off the vine!

In case you’re wondering, the white petals have fallen all weekend off a tree in our backyard, and they’ve blown all over cars, the deck, and the garden. It looks like snow now that the wind has been blowing all morning.

I’d also like to give Hubby the outdoorsman award, because he’s also been mowing, weeding, and pressure-washing and staining our deck. He’s a keeper, y’all.

Praying || for sleep. I really feel like we are under attack in this area. Between Hubby’s late night work, a toddler who is getting up before 7 (unheard of with our kids until the past two weeks) and an 8 month old who is waking 1-3 times a night (having previously slept through the night), we are at a total loss. I’m having anxiety about even going to sleep at all, because I’m afraid that I’ll just be woken right after I actually get to sleep. It’s a bad cycle. So if you’re a praying friend, pray for sleep at our house.

Scheduling || our lives for the week. We have a lot going on between Holy Week (and my church job), Hubby’s two albums he’s in the middle of, some writing projects in working on, and just keeping up with regular life stuff. We don’t usually plan out weeks out in advance because our work is typically flexible, and we don’t mind working at odd hours. But this week, we’ve got deadlines and I have extra church services, and we need to really be diligent if we are to accomplish everything!

That being said, if you are local, Reynolda’s Easter weekend is going to be INCREDIBLE. Here’s the run down:

Good Friday Service, Village Campus: this Friday evening at 6:30pm & 8:00pm

Easter Sunrise Service, St. Peter’s World Outreach Center: We partner with them every year and it is a PARTY to kick off your Easter Day. This year, it’s at their place at 7:00am this coming Sunday.

Reynolda Easter Services: Village Campus Worship Center at 9:30am and 11am, Ascent (in the fellowship hall, where I’ll be!) at 9:30am and 11am and at the Union Cross Campus at 11am!

So many opportunities to celebrate and worship and check out Reynolda! If you don’t have a church home and you live in the triad, get to one of these services!

What are you doing for Easter? Is anyone out there planting this spring?

Things Toddlers Say

Hey y’all, and happy Tuesday… and happy MARCH!! I don’t know about you, but spring seems to have sprung here in NC (at least for the week), and I can’t wait to completely indulge in warm weather happenings. What’s it like where you are? Do you need some humor to cheer you out of a cold weather slump? Here it is!

Overheard on J’s monitor during nap time: The Batman theme song.
You know, just saving Gotham City, one nap at a time.

Me, whispering: I love you, J.
J: I love you!
Me: I love you, EK.
EK: YAY!!

EK: There are so many princesses at the Mex-can restaurant!

J: What happened, Mommy?!
Hubby: You stuck your elbow straight in your food.

One night we were out to dinner, and right after we said the prayer…
EK: Amen. Cheers!!!!

Watching The Sound of Music…
J: It’s do-re-Mia! (Maria, of course.)

In a restaurant with some friends at lunch, and the power turns off…
EK, eyes wide: Holy crayap!

EK has been watching a lot of Cinderella. In the bathtub she was scrubbing the walls and singing: Oh, sweet nightingale, oh, sweet nightingale…. (The actual words are, “Sing, sweet nightingale, sing, sweet nightingale…”)

J, puts a piece of ham in his mouth: I don’t like it. (Spits it out. Looks at it. Puts it back in and eats it.) Can I have some more meat?

EK’s new favorite word: dangerous. But only if it’s used incorrectly.

EK: Can I have a sip of that? (My mom’s beer)
Necie: No, you’re not quite old enough.
EK: But I am skinny!

I go into the spare bedroom (where we dump the laundry) and see this:  J, wearing mittens, atop Mt. Laundry. And he says, “I schwimming!”

Heard from the other room:
EK: Do it right now! Say yes ma’am!
J: Yes ma’am!

Now let’s hear it… what crazy things are your kids saying?

 Things Toddlers Say

Happy Tuesday, y’all! Nothing much to report, so here we go!

J cries because he put an enormous potato chip in his mouth.
EK: It’s okay, buddy. You’ll get it.

EK: Let’s go into the kitchen!
J: Let’s go to the chicken!

EK: Here’s some rabbits for you!
Me: Okay, then…

I hurt my foot and I moaned and groaned about it for a while…
J: Don’t cry, mama.
Me: Are you all at once the cutest and most concerned kid?
J: Yeah.

J walks up to EK, wearing two bead necklaces.
EK: Joseph, do you want to be a king, and I’ll be the princess?
J: Yeah! (Gives her one of the necklaces.) Here you go, Princess!
EK: Thank you!
This was obviously all pre-arranged, right?

J: I wanna snuggle! Sing the train song!
Me: Come on ride…
J: Sing Eidelweiss!
Me: Eidelweiss, Eidelweiss…
J: Sing Oceans!
Me: You call me out… (The first verse.)
J: No! Oceans!
Me: And I will call upon your name… (The chorus.)
J: Close the door now.
Me: Well, I just feel used.

J, holding the Apple TV remote: I got it!
Me, controlling tv with my phone: Ok, buddy.
J, furiously pushing buttons: Look! I got it!
Me, still controlling it: Yep, totally.
The battery was dead. But who needed to know?

Me: Joseph and I are cleaning! Do you think you cold help us?
Ek: Um… No… I’m going to… Um… Read the Bible!
Apparently she thinks I’m not going to argue with such an activity.

Well, have a merry Christmas, everyone!

Currently

Hello, Wednesday! It’s a better day for this week’s Currently anyway. I’m linking up with Becky at Choose Happy and the rest of those great blog friends! Enjoy, and tell me what you are up to currently!

Loving || wearing boots! I have my trusty brown pair I ordered off of Amazon last year (the brand is “Very Volatile”) and I think I’m going to invest in a pair of booties (Do we call them that? I just mean ankle boots.) for this year! I like the fact that I don’t have to think much about my footwear- I just pop it on.

Excited || about Halloween with my big kids. They’ve each got a couple of costume choices already here in the house, and we are headed to the pumpkin patch this morning to choose pumpkins and take a few pictures. It should be fun! We are also heading to the country club Halloween event next Thursday, our church’s trunk or treat event on Halloween, and then trick or treating a bit afterwards. Talk about busy!

Traveling || to Georgia to see my family this weekend! It’ll be our first big road trip with three kiddos, so thank goodness our new car has a DVD player! Hopefully D will hold out and nap a lot. It would take hubby and I a little less than six hours if we were by ourselves, but it’s taken up to nine with the kids and all the stops they need. Hopefully we won’t take nine this time since we aren’t leaving until noon!

Enjoying || fall weather! We got to spend some time on a friend’s farm on Saturday, and we’ve been playing outside a lot at home, too. Here is proof we love fall:

Celebrating || my father-in-law’s birthday! On Monday we had lunch and dinner with the family. We love having the kids all together and knowing that we’ve got two more coming! We also just found out that the two coming are a boy (in January) and a girl (in March)! Blessings abound!

Well there’s my late edition of Currently. What are you up to?

Currently

Folks, I’m feeling pretty silly that I missed a week of Currently. So hopefully this one will be stellar enough to make up for it! Here’s a bit about what’s been going on since my last Currently. I’m linking up like always with Becky at Choose Happy!!

Reading || About That Fling by Tawna Fenske. It popped up on an ad on my Kindle, it was on sale, and it sounded like a good beach-type read. It was! There was nothing really incredible about it, but it’s a great romance with a love triangle and a little akwardness to round it all out, haha. It was fairly easy to read and I plowed right through it, which is my favorite thing about a book I’m really enjoying. I just (finally) downloaded The Girl on the Train so I’m excited to start it!

Excited || for fall TV to start back! I’m always really glad to start back up with the shows that stop for the summer – even though thank goodness for Netflix to get me through! I’ll be watching Modern Family, New Girl, Grimm, and Once Upon a Time. Anything else I should add to my queue?

Enjoying || spending time with my big kids. Now that they’re both in school a couple/few days a week (9-noon) and the fact that lunch and naps take up most of the afternoon, I’m trying to spend more intentional time with them. They’re also thriving now that they’ve got some time away from each other. There have been some sweet moments (organic moments, even!) of togetherness in the past couple of weeks, and I love it. I’ve also added a cute thing to EK’s bedtime routine. I ask her what her favorite part of the day was, and I share mine, and we talk about them. Sometimes she even extends the conversation to something she didn’t like, and we can talk about that, too. I don’t like to talk about the negative part too much, but sometimes it opens up good conversation. It’s been really nice to get to know each other better in this way.

Cleaning || up after my son all day every day. Y’all, J is like a tasmanian devil, a whirling dervish… he wrecks SO MUCH without really even trying. In one day, he’d locked himself into two rooms (and our door locks don’t unlock easily) so we took the doorknobs off the two rooms, and behind one of the doors, he was pouring my (favorite) dark grey nail polish on the floor! I’d like to say I didn’t get mad, but I did. I totally checked out; I handed Hubby the nail polish remover and told him to leave as much of the floor finish as he could. It doesn’t look too bad, but I was just surprised J could be so destructive in a matter of two minutes – what a huge parenting fail. I don’t know how to do a better job teaching him what not to touch, where not to go, what things to be careful with. I know it’s just “a boy thing” but I need him to calm it down. Phew!

Baking || pumpkin muffins! I’m going to do two recipes… this one from Wellness Mama and this one from the Barefoot Cook. Hopefully they turn out well! Hooray for triple naps and baking!

What are you up to currently? Have any pumpkin recipes you love? Anything else fall-related you’re doing?

Currently

Hello everybody! I hope y’all had a great long weekend! We didn’t do much – and that was totally fine with us. Mostly relaxing and catching up on life a little bit. I’m such a nut, though… I checked my (snail) mail three times on Monday wondering why it hadn’t come. It obviously didn’t feel like a holiday to me, ha!

I’m linking up as usual with Becky from Choose Happy for her weekly Currently link up. Please join us and let us know what’s up with you and yours!

Running || around my neighborhood, two miles at a time. It’s been tough, but really good for me. I’ll be posting about that journey this week.

Our neighbors have horses, and every once in a while, we can see them from the sidewalk!
Eating || a delightfully slow and quiet breakfast with Hubby this morning, after we dropped the big kids at preschool. D took a morning nap and we ate at Mary’s Gourmet Diner downtown. I’ve always loved that place, and I was glad we had a morning treat there today!

Cleaning || our laundry room and mudroom. This morning when we got home from breakfast, I continued the laundry blitz I had started yesterday, and vacuumed, organized, and put down our new indoor-doormats from Homegoods. I love that place!

Making || cookies! They’re just break-and-bake, but that way I can let EK and J do everything and they love that.

There’s a little update on our lives! What have you been up to currently??

Like I Have Known Him Forever

This post also appeared on My Big Jesus

Have you ever had a person in your life that you just met, but you already feel like you’ve known each other forever? Right when you meet them, you realize you’ve got tons in common and your personality complements the other’s, and you immediately have a few inside jokes?

That’s how I feel about our newest baby.

I know. That seems crazy. I don’t know if we’ve got much in common besides genes. We don’t have any inside jokes yet. But I already feel like I’ve known him for ages, like I know him well and love him with a older love, an aged love, a love that’s stood the test of time – for more than his month of being out in the world.

You see, I didn’t feel so strongly this way with my other two kids when they were born. With our first, she was new. Everything about her was uncharted territory, from the sound of her cry in the middle of the night to the way we thought about her all the time and planned our lives around her. With our second, he was just a different baby. Not easier or harder than our first, but already our attention was split between the two and it was a huge adjustment. He naturally went with the flow of life that we had going before he arrived. It was his only choice, and he still is that way – a lot like his dad.

But now, having welcomed our third baby into the world and into our family, he feels like he’s always been with us. He snuck in, early one morning, after months of anticipation. His siblings immediately loved him, and are ever so gentle with him (excepting J sometimes… he wants to love him hard). His schedule is flexible, his personality a little mix of all of us. He gets hangry (an affectionate nod to his siblings), he’s strong (I’m looking at you, Hubby) especially for a newborn, and he loves snuggling (just like me) even to the point of preferring to be worn than be laid down. He is alert, like his sister was, and sleeps hard like his brother did. He looks simply like himself, instead of being one of us made over.

Of course there are times that we feel overwhelmed – such as thinking about the sheer amount of laundry a newborn adds. There are nights of way too little sleep, and mornings that packing the kids in the car and driving through Chick-fil-A for biscuits is easier than cooking for them. There are naps I wish I was taking and showers everyone else wishes I was taking. But all in all, we don’t feel like he’s an addition of any sort, not a stranger or an outlaw. He feels like he should be here, like he’s always been here. His one month of life with us has been incredibly fun, surprisingly not difficult, and a blessing indeed. For a kid who we were afraid we’d never meet, he sure is the perfect little fit for our family.

I Never Dreamed Big… and that’s okay. (On Mom Babble)

Happy Saturday, everyone! This morning I’m on Mom Babble, writing about something really close to my heart. I’ve really opened up and poured out, so please go over and read it!   Here’s a little bit to get you hooked…

I have a confession to make: I’ve never had a clear vision for my life.

I never had some huge goal I really wanted to accomplish. I didn’t have a career path I had wanted since childhood. I haven’t had a huge dream that was waiting out there for me to come catch it. I’m picturing a Broadway musical here… the swell of the orchestra, the anticipation of the audience, the main character (who we already love) bursting into song as she sets out to find her place in the world.

I just don’t feel like I’ve ever had that moment. I’ve had wonderful experiences, adventures, and moments that were huge for me. I’ve taken big steps in the direction of my future. But I’ve never had this one perfect thing that I’ve had years of building up and getting around to…

10 Life Lessons You Probably Learned in Your Twenties

I’m thrilled to be featured over on Scary Mommy right now, talking a bit about my twenties. Please hop over there, share the post if you love it, and show Scary Mommy some love!

Excerpt:

As I near the halfway point of my 29th year, I look back on my fabulous 20s and see a pattern. I see myself getting slightly more tame, busier, and zero percent less awesome.

I find myself more confident, happier, and super excited about the next, supposedly dreaded, decade of my life. I’ve learned important things in the past 10 years, and I’m applying that knowledge to make my next 10 years easier, and hopefully more fun.

The Unintentional Pampers Challenge, Part Deux

All size 4: Pampers (crushed in the diaper bag), Huggies, Kirkland/Costco, and Babies R Us. Which do you use?

When I asked you about diapers, you – the readers! – had a lot to say! I’ve broken down the info to help myself and help you, if you’re like me, and you want an expensive but reliable way to keep all the bottoms (and the clothes, and the sheets) dry.

The most common answer for the diapers you love is Pampers. I’m pretty much there with you. They’re basically the most expensive, but the cost seems to be worth it for most of us.

The next best thing sounds like Luvs. I’ve never even bought/used those at all, so I’m taking your advice. Next time I buy diapers, I’m going with a box of Luvs to try them out on the kiddos. From what you said, they’re less expensive than Pampers, but just as good!

I also heard great things about Honest Company and 7th Generation, mostly about how they’re great for the baby and great for the environment. Well, I’m convicted. I’ve heard great things about 7th Gen for a long time, and have wanted to try their diapers in the past, and I feel the same way about Honest Company, except that their expensive. I don’t really need my diapers to be adorable (I’m looking at you, Honest Company, and your delightful cupcakes and colorful hot air balloons) but I do need them to be affordable. I mean, I’m diapering two kiddos right now (EK still won’t be consistent about pottying. More on than later.) and while hopefully it’ll be only two when the next baby is born, I’m thinking that EK might still be in a nighttime diaper then anyway.

Lots of you say you use Huggies Overnights during the night and something cheaper during the day. I totally feel you on this. Especially if you’re potty training one, and it’s staying dry most of the day (or even some of the day) it seems like “Who cares what sort of diaper it is?!” I’ve never bought the Huggies Overnights, but maybe I need to! How much more expensive are they, someone?

The last awesome thing I heard was that Up&Up (Target) and Amazon Elements (Amazon.com) were possibly gonna be just as useful for daytime. That’s great, because who isn’t at Target all the time? And who doesn’t love diapers delivered to your door?!

Things you didn’t like: Wal-Mart brand, Sam’s brand (coincidence? Probably not.) and regular Huggies (with a couple exceptions).

Oh, by the way. Another hilarious side note from all my reader responses… Several of you mentioned having “super pee-ers” and almost all of you who said that said it in the same way. Well, I think I’m among you. Super pee-ers, unite!

So now I’ve got a to do list. I’m going to try Luvs. I’m going to try Huggies Overnights. I’m going to try Up&Up. I’m gonna try Amazon Elements. I’m also (gasp!) going to borrow some gdiapers from a friend, and try those, now that my kids are out of the new-diaper-every-two-hours stage. Because that’s a lot of laundry, am I right?

I’ll keep you posted on the diaper challenge front. I will be your diaper champion, and we will celebrate having the least-leaky, most affordable option! (Oh my. What a mom thing to say.)
